When working on an image, retouching a picture, it is sometimes really useful to come back a few steps in your work to compare the old version to the new one with the changes. It allows you to see if you really did some improvements, and eventually to compare two versions of the same image.

Thanks to the history panel, Photoshop allows you to do that in a few clicks without having to undo all changes until the desired state of your image!

For that you will need the history panel, it is usually to the right side of your workspace. If not go to Window > History.

  1. Select a “before” state by coming back a few steps in your history panel
  2. Click the  New snapshot button at the bottom of the History panel. new_snapshot
  3. Select an “after” state by going forward a few steps in the history panel.
  4. Create another snapshot with the new snapshot button.

And you’re done. You can now choose to display one state or the other by clicking on the snapshot at the top of the history panel. That’s an easy way to compareyour two versions and decide which one is better than the other!

This is a very useful tip. Too many times have I gone too far with changing a design and been unable to ‘Undo’ out of it – wasting hours of my time.
