How to: learn to use brush presets

The brush tool is maybe one of the most used tools in Photoshop. There are so many things you can do with it, especially when you know how to set it to do exactly what you want from it!

The brush tool is maybe one of the most used tools in Photoshop. There are so many things you can do with it, especially when you know how to set it to do exactly what you want from it!

Let’s take an example in order to show the basics of the brush tool.

  1. Create a new document.
  2. Go to Window > Brushes to make the rush preset window appear among your other tools. You will use this window as well as the Brush options panel available at the top of your working space when the brush tool (press B key) is selected.

  3. One of the powers of Photoshop brushes is that you can download sets of brushes from all over the web. For our example, we will use a flower set I found there.
  4. Once you have installed your brush by dropping the file you downloaded into the Presets > Brushes folder you will find in your Photoshop installation folder, this brush set will be available in Photoshop by clicking the small arrow at the top right of the Brush options panel. brush-options
  5. One you have selected the flower you want to use, simply give it a try by brushing over your workspace. It should give you something like below. Not quite like flowers, don’t you think?
    brush1
  6. That’s where the other panel we have seen in the beginning of the tutorial comes into action. Bring it back by hitting the F5 key.
  7. Now we need to add some space between all the flowers drawn by the brush, in order to avoid them hiding each other like on the figure above. What could be also good would be to have them distributed randomly on the work area. We will then use these two options:
    spacing scattering
  8. Play a bit with all these options, you can get an idea of the result in the preview window, then start drawing! Here is what I got:

Much nicer than at first, don’t you think? These are two important tools to manage when using brushes. In our next tutorial we will keep using this nice Flower Photoshop brush and I will show you an additional option among Brush presets!
